How to Make Red Sandstone in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 4 red sand per red sandstone block
- Pickaxe to recover placed blocks
Step by step
- Collect red sand from a badlands biome. Keep it separate from ordinary sand.
- Gather four red sand for each red sandstone block.
- Put one red sand in each of the four inventory crafting slots, or arrange four in a 2×2 square on a crafting table.
- Take one red sandstone block. This recipe does not need fuel or a furnace.
- Use red sandstone for orange walls, floors and desert-style builds. Unlike loose red sand, the block is not affected by gravity.
- Collect placed red sandstone with any pickaxe. Breaking it without a pickaxe drops nothing.
Java vs Bedrock
The four-red-sand recipe works in Java and Bedrock. Ordinary sand makes regular sandstone, not red sandstone. Dyeing regular sandstone is not a substitute for this recipe.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a crafting table?
No. Four red sand fit in the 2×2 inventory crafting grid.
Can I use regular sand and red dye?
No. The recipe requires red sand. Ordinary sand produces regular sandstone.
Does red sandstone fall like red sand?
No. Red sandstone is a solid building block and stays in place without support underneath.
